Clear guidance on Ontario marriage laws and ceremony planning.

How do we obtain a marriage license?

You must book an appointment at a local city hall or municipal office to apply. Both parties should generally attend, though some municipalities may allow one person to apply if they bring two pieces of valid government-issued identification for both individuals. If either of you has been divorced, you are required to bring the original or a court-certified copy of your final divorce decree. The licensing fee typically ranges between $130 and $200 depending on the specific municipality.

What are the requirements for witnesses?

During the ceremony, Ontario law requires two witnesses to be present to sign the marriage register and the license. These witnesses must be over the age of 18. Beyond the age requirement, they can be anyone you choose—family members, close friends, or even two people you meet on the day of the ceremony.

Who is eligible to get married in Ontario?

To be legally married in Ontario, you must not be currently married to anyone else; if you were previously married, you must provide proof of a legal divorce. Additionally, you cannot be blood relatives (specifically in a way that violates federal incest laws). The standard age requirement is 18 years or older, though individuals who are 16 or 17 years old may marry if they have written consent from their parents or guardians.
